Whether it is an Xcel wetsuits or an O’Neill wetsuit, proper care and maintenance should be done by the moment it is bought to preserve the integrity and function of the suit. Quality wetsuits such as Xcel wetsuits or O’Neill wetsuit have long life spans but constant use and improper handling can create a toll on it and destroy the material earlier than expected. It should always be maintained regularly and the wearer should be trained on how to repair if there are any tears or damages.
If regularly used, wetsuits will start to stink, zippers will rust and even the seals will tear. It takes more than a common wash, rinse and hang to properly maintain the suit although most of the basic problems, like smell can be removed on that part. It is better to have a little knowledge on how to repair minor problems to save money from costly repairs. Every time you take off the suit from an activity, it is advised to submerge it in clean fresh water. It will remove small debris and other detriments that accumulated on the suit before it hardens. After soaking, clean the suit to avoid having unpleasant odor. If the suit is stored without proper cleaning, some bacteria that can’t be removed by soaking can cause it to be smelly. Use a soft brush in scrubbing the neoprene. Rub wax, paraffin or beeswax, on the outside edges of the zipper. After rinsing hang the suit to dry. Avoid using metal hangers because the rust can destroy the neoprene layer. In storing the suit, make sure it is loose. Dents and creases on the neoprene can be permanent.
Most damages on wetsuits are tears or gouged spots on the neoprene. In case of tears, use a neoprene cement to repair it. Simply apply some of the cement on the edges of the tear. Read first the instruction on the adhesive for any additional information. If the suit has gouges, use liquid silicone or liquid rubber fiber to fill the spot and leave it to dry. Zipper problem is a major headache to owners that it is recommended to buy a new suit than repair it. Always check the zipper regularly and keep it maintained.
